We must ensure that Londoners win
rather than lose through hosting the Olympics.
I believe the Olympics must be managed
and delivered within the original £2.4bn budget. We simply must not allow cost overruns;
they deprive other areas of much needed investment.
Latest plans amount to a
staggering
£1,000,000 a competitor! The current estimates of up to £10bn and
possibly £15bn make it a disaster waiting to happen.
The proposals are a recipe for waste and disruption.
I believe that Olympic events should be decentralised across London -
there is no need for a special stadium or an Olympic Village. By spreading
the games, we can reduce pressure on public transport and ensure that
investment is of lasting benefit to all Londoners.
We must not allow measures, such as special Olympic car lanes, that will
disrupt the lives of ordinary Londoners or the business of the capital.
I
believe that
council tax payers should be able to opt
out of paying the Olympic Levy. Londoners who contribute should get
discounts on tickets and other benefits but those who prefer to watch
the event on television should not have to pay more than anyone else in
the UK.
